Starry Night
by Simpleton

Challenge: Starry Night, by Vincent van Gogh.
Medium: Mixed Media, primarily pastel and sharpie on oaktag.

Notes: "Starry Night" by van Gogh is one of the most fascinating paintings I have ever seen. Although painted while van Gogh was in an asylum, during the disintegration of his sanity, the painting has an almost calm feel to it.

Because of the history behind Starry Night, I chose to focus on the emotion of the painting rather than the actual scene or style. To me, Remus Lupin seems like he would have a tortured soul, due to certain events in his life, but his calm facade masks his extreme suffering. My drawing takes place a few years in the future, during his nervous breakdown.

There are eleven stars in Starry Night, and in my drawing, they represent the people Lupin cares about who are dead or gone. This entire piece is symbolism, so if you're confused about anything, don't hesitate to ask what it means, because I'd be more than happy to tell you ^^

About the drawing: Originally, I started a fic for this challenge, but soon gave up as I am not an author and would never get it done in time. So I did this instead. It took me about three days and is composed of pastel, skinny black sharpie, silver sharpie, wrapping paper, gift tags, tissue paper, stickers, and sparkly crayon on oaktag. I'm pleased with the piece itself but the photo turned out really bad. In real life, it's not this blurry, so, my apologies. There is no tree in this version, because I made one and it just made the drawing too busy, I think. However, I took a photo of the piece with the tree anyway, which can be seen here. I also have a details page, which turned out blurry as well. Ah well. Sorry about the extremelylong!author notes. I just wanted to explain my drawing.

Oh, and the text at the bottom is from AFI's "Death of Seasons", and reads "I hope to shade the world as stars go out and I disintegrate". Ok, I swear I'm done now.
